{"id":169555,"date":"2020-11-16T06:02:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-16T11:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.wordsmyth.net\/?p=169555"},"modified":"2026-02-18T22:23:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T22:23:23","slug":"participate-in-woty-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog2.wordsmyth.net\/help\/2020\/11\/16\/participate-in-woty-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"You are invited to participate in choosing Wordsmyth Word of the Year 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p><strong>We were first to include you!<\/strong> &nbsp;In 2018, Wordsmyth launched the first participatory Word of the Year (WOTY) process.&nbsp; There are a number of organizations that announce WOTY selections each year &#8212; including most of the major dictionaries of English.&nbsp; Different criteria are used to select a WOTY, depending on the internal deliberations of the organization.&nbsp; The Wordsmyth process is different. <strong>We want to involve our users in the WOTY process each year.<\/strong> And we want to make the discussion of WOTY candidates an interesting and educational process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog2.wordsmyth.net\/help\/2020\/11\/vote-for-woty-2020\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog2.wordsmyth.net\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Word-of-the-Year-2020-4-1024x390.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169589\" width=\"512\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Everyone can participate<\/strong> &#8212; students and teachers, friendship and work groups, and families can all take up the discussion of <strong>what words have been most important in 2020<\/strong>.&nbsp; Sometimes these may be <strong>definitional discussions<\/strong> \u2013 when the changing meanings of a word become significant. For example, among this year\u2019s nominations is the word \u201cracism,\u201d whose meaning garnered much attention this year.&nbsp; Or there may be significant importance in the <strong>discussion of which word to use<\/strong> in discussing some part of our society and culture. For example, some states with conservative constituencies who are skeptical of \u201cclimate change\u201d have been searching for other terms to use in applying for financial relief from the damage from recent storms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog2.wordsmyth.net\/help\/2020\/11\/wordsmyths-nominations-for-woty-2020\/\">Our 10 nominations<\/a>!<\/strong> This year we are launching our participatory WOTY selection process by presenting our nomination of 10 words that have been significant in this most unusual and challenging year.\u00a0 Some of these words have been noted already in our \u201cAbout these words\u201d blog posts.
